Prima di introdurvi la talentuosissima Ivana Colakovic, vi farò una breve sintesi sulla storia dell’illustrazione di moda.
Sin dalle tavole gotiche di Pisanello, il disegno è stato per secoli il primo “fotografo” delle tendenze moda. Artisti di ogni epoca si sono dedicati a studi di panneggio, pizzi, merletti e abiti dalle fogge più complesse e stravaganti, tracciando così la storia del costume, tuttavia studi ancora legati alle opere artistiche. Le prime illustrazioni di moda ariveranno con i primi Trattati sul costume del ‘600 (le acqueforti di Hollar). I primi giornali di moda nasceranno invece a metà ‘700: i Cahiers de la mode a larga diffusione, serviranno ad informare le dame delle varie corti europee sulle ultime novità della moda. Naturalmente gli illustratori non saranno ancora considerati propriamente artisti, anche se stile e tecniche provengono dal mondo della pittura. La promozione ad arte di serie “A”, arriverà alla fine dello ‘800 con la nascita delle riviste di moda Harper’s Bazaar e Vogue, in cui l’illustrazione di moda diventerà parte integrante dell’intero progetto editoriale. Charles Dana Gibson, spopolerà con la sua Gibson Girl alta e snella, che le lettrici cercheranno (inutilmente) di imitare, dando vita così all’idealizzazione della figura umana.A lui faranno seguito tantissimi altri da Erté, Bakst, Lepape, fino a Renè Gruau che si prenderà la briga di diventare il più grande illustratore di Dior, dopo di lui Antonio Lopez per Valentino e tanti altri.
Welcome friends of Robyan blog, today I want to introduce you to a world of which I have not yet spoken to you: the fashion illustration! Before to introduce you the talented Ivana Colakovic, I will give you a short summary of the history of fashion illustration. Since the gothic tables of Pisanello, drawing has been for centuries the first “photographer” of fashion trends. Artists of all ages have dedicated themselves to drapery studies, ribbons, lace and dresses with the most complex and extravagant styles, tracing the costume’s history, but still related to the artistic works. The first fashion illustrations will come with the first Treaties on the costume of the ‘600 (the etchings of Hollar). The first fashion magazines will be born in the middle of the 18th century: the Cahiers de la mode will be widely used to inform the ladies of the various European courts on the latest fashion news. Naturally, the illustrators will not yet be properly considered artists, even if style and techniques come from the world of painting. The “A” series art promotion will arrive at the end of the 19th century with the birth of the fashion magazines Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, where fashion illustration will become an integral part of the entire publishing project. Charles Dana Gibson, will be famous with his tall and slim Gibson Girl, which the female readers will try (in vain) to imitate, this will be the first idealization of the human figure. He will be followed by many others by Erté, Bakst, Lepape, up to René Gruau who will take the trouble to become the greatest illustrator of Dior, after him Antonio Lopez for Valentino and many others.
Naturalmente la mia è una super – sintesi perché voglio parlarvi di Ivana Colakovic.
Ho chiesto ad Ivana di raccontarmi un po’ la sua storia e le ho posto alcune domande per conoscerla meglio: sin da quando era bambina le piaceva disegnare, passando ore e ore a guardare le riviste di moda della mamma, non immaginando minimamente che quello sarebbe stato poi il suo mondo. Passa il tempo e da sempre appassionata di cultura s’iscrive a Sociologia, però presto, si rende conto che non è quella la sua strada e decide così di iscriversi ad un corso di laurea in Graphic Design, lavora per un po’ come grafica, ma nonappena vede un rivista con delle illustrazioni, le tornano in mente i disegni che tanto la rendevano felice da bambina e così comincia la sua carriera di illustratrice di moda free lance.
Of course mine is a super – summary because I want to talk about Ivana Colacovic. I asked Ivana to tell me about her story andi made a little interview trough few questions to get to know her better: since she was a child she liked to draw, spending hours and hours watching her mother’s fashion magazines, not imagining in the least that then it was her world. Time passes and Ivana, always passionate about culture, statrted to study Sociology, but soon she realizes that his path is not the right one and she decides to take a degree in Graphic Design, she works for a while as a graphic designer, but as soon as she sees a magazine with some illustrations, the drawings that make her happy when she was a child come back to her memory, so begins her career as a freelance fashion illustrator.
R) Ivana, nel Robyan Blog è la prima volta che si parla dell’illustrazione di moda: puoi spiegare cosa significa essere un illustratore di moda e come nasce la tua passione per la moda prima e per l’illustrazione di moda dopo?
I) La Fashion illustrator è una persona che ha trasformato la sua passione per la bellezza e il design in un lusso visivo “fatto a mano”. Penso che la mia passione per la moda sia nata come quella di una qualsiasi altra ragazza quando vede sua madre vestire elegantemente per la prima volta. Onestamente penso che da quel momento in poi non ho più smesso di appassionarmi alla bellezza femminile che mi emoziona ancora.
R) Hi Ivana, for Robyan Blog is a new thing talk about fashion illustration: Please can you explain what mean to be a fashion illustrator and how is born your passion for fashion first and for fashion illustration after?
I) Fashion illustrator is a person who has transformed his passion for beauty and design into a handmade visual luxury. I think my passion for fashion was born the same way as with any other girl when she saw her mom in a glamorous appearance for the first time. I honestly think that from that moment on nothing has changed in my passion for feminine beauty, and it still moves me
R) Sicuramente hai fonti di ispirazione: chi sono le tue muse ispiratrici?
I) Gli editoriali di moda e lo street style hanno avuto un impatto importante su di me. Le mie muse sono modelli angelici che possono essere visti nelle campagne di moda di Valentino e Chanel. Naturalmente ci sono anche illustratori di moda di talento sublime come Laura Laine, Nuno da Costa, Judith Van Den Hoek e molti altri.
R) Surely you have sources of inspiration: who are your inspiring muses?
I) Fashion editorials and street style have had a key impact on me. My muses are angelic models that can be seen on Valentino’s and Chanel’s fashion campaigns. Of course there are also sublime talented fashion illustrators such as Laura Laine, Nuno da Costa, Judith Van Den Hoek and many others.
R) Per essere un buon illustratore di buona moda, pensi che sia anche necessario essere un fashion designer?
I) Credo sia un ambito in cui entrambe s’intrecciano. Devi avere un senso per un bel design mentre disegni, anche se penso che il disegno di moda sia una disciplina completamente separata. Ci sono tanti stili: alcuni illustratori con i disegni mostrano anche le loro idee di moda, mentre altri sono completamente astratti.
R) To be a good fashion illustrator do you think it must be also a fashion designer?
I) I feel I have found a place where two of them intertwine. You need to have a sense for nice design while you draw, but I still think fashion design is a completely separate discipline. There are infinitely many styles, some illustrators through drawings also show their design ideas, while others are completely abstract.
R) Cos’è la bellezza e l’eleganza per te?
I) La bellezza è l’unica cosa che dà senso ai mali della vita. Si armonizza e si equilibra. È l’incarnazione di tutto ciò che Dio ha nell’uomo. Mostrare la bellezza di una donna attraverso le lenti della moda (come un fenomeno sociale che tratta la bellezza in modo completamente esclusivo) è un approccio molto appassionante. Per quanto riguarda l’eleganza, citerò la signora Coco: Less is more.
R) What is the beauty and the elegance for you?
I) Beauty is the only thing that gives meaning to the mischief of life. It harmonizes and balances. It is the embodiment of everything God-like in man. Showing the beauty of a woman through lenses of fashion (as a social phenomenon that treats beauty in a completely exclusive way) is a very exciting approach. As for the elegance I will quote Mrs. Coco: Less is more.
R) Cosa consiglieresti a chi volesse intraprendere la carriera di illustratore di moda?
I) Consiglierei loro di sperimentare e provare tutti i tipi di media per raggiungere uno stile personale. Viviamo in un’epoca in cui l’arte è molto accessibile, sia nel bene che nel male, quindi abbiamo solo bisogno di rilassarci e lavorare e tutto andrà a posto. Vorrei anche consigliare loro di non imitare altri stili per quanto siano fantastici: dovrebbero seguire i propri moti interiori che sicuramente porteranno verso la giusta direzione.
R) What would you recommend to those who want to pursue a career as a fashion illustrator?
I) I would recommend to them to experiment and try all kinds of media until they discover their unique style. We live in a time when art is very accessible, both good and bad, so we just need to relax and work and everything will come into place. I would also advise them not to compare with another style no matter how fantastic it is, they should follow their own internal impulses that will surely lead them to the right place.
R) Progetti futuri?
I) Non sto pianificando nulla, sono solo dedita al lavoro e i progetti tendono a venire da me, c’è sempre una sfida che appassiona tipica del lavorare come libero professionista. Credo che non cambierò mai modo di lavorare, perché alla fine della giornata la cosa più importante è aver seguito il tuo cuore.
R) Future projects?
I) I’m not planning anything I’m just devoted to work and projects tend to come to me and there is always a challenge and excitement which is part of the beauty of working as a freelancer. I think I would never change that because still at the end of the day it is most important to follow your heart.
